Reviving the Past Through Food and Storytelling

The Giser House, a historic miners' dwelling in Idrija, Slovenia, has undergone a remarkable transformation. Before its physical restoration, the house served as a living museum, inviting visitors to step back in time and experience the lives of its former inhabitants through a unique gastronomic-theatrical experience, in which food becomes a catalyst for emotions from the past.

The Giser House experience combines the art of storytelling with the delight of fine dining. As guests arrive, they are greeted by a harmonica player and guided to the house, where a captivating drama unfolds. The theatrical performance is accompanied by a four-course meal, carefully curated to reflect the culinary traditions of the era. Using a cookbook from 1920 found within the house, the menu features "forgotten" dishes that are both authentically Idrian and remarkably delicious.

A Journey Through Time

Set in 1922, the play revolves around the Črv family, whose lives are intertwined with the rich mining history of Idrija. Idrija, at that time, was a small but vibrant town in Italy, known for its centuries-old mining tradition. The town was also an important center of culture and art. In 1922, about 6,000 people lived in Idrija, most of whom were employed in the mercury mine. After the Treaty of Rapallo in 1920, Idrija was assigned to Italy along with most of the Littoral. This meant that Idrija became part of the Italian state and was subject to Italian laws and policies.

With the rise of fascism in Italy (in 1922, Benito Mussolini of the National Fascist Party became Prime Minister), the presence of fascists, their organizations, and propaganda in Idrija also increased, leading to strong distrust among the locals. There were more and more Italian soldiers and officials in Idrija who seduced young locals. Among the elderly, the memory of Austria-Hungary remained strong.

Through the captivating storytelling, delectable cuisine, and immersive atmosphere, the Giser House experience transports guests back to a time when Idrija was a bustling mining town. The play delves into the challenges and triumphs of the Črv family, offering a glimpse into the lives of ordinary people during a tumultuous period in history.
